A highly anticipated non-conference football series between Clemson and Georgia has been called off. The two schools have mutually agreed to cancel four games that were set for the 2029, 2030, 2032, and 2033 seasons, according to a Monday report from the Athens Banner-Herald.
The cancellation was confirmed through a document signed by Clemson athletic director Graham Neff and Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks in March, which was obtained via a public records request. The specific games that will no longer be played include: September 29, 2029, at Clemson's Memorial Stadium; August 31, 2030, at Georgia's Sanford Stadium; September 4, 2032, at Sanford Stadium; and September 3, 2033, at Memorial Stadium. These matchups had originally been scheduled in 2018 and 2019.
Key Analysis
The cancellations come as both programs adapt to the realities of a nine-game conference schedule and its impact on non-conference opponents. Starting in 2026, every SEC team will play nine conference games, and the ACC has adopted a similar model with 16 of its 17 teams playing nine league games beginning in 2027. The Big Ten and Big 12 also compete with nine conference games, leading dozens of schools to cut previously scheduled Power 4 non-conference matchups. For teams with annual in-state rivalry games like Clemson and Georgia, scheduling flexibility is even more limited.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the news at his weekly press conference on Tuesday, expressing his dislike for the move, particularly for the fans, but acknowledging the necessity. '2026, the world – that's all I can tell you,' Swinney said. 'It's college football.'
The Tigers play in-state rival South Carolina annually at the end of the season and are also set to begin a 12-year rotating home-and-home series with Notre Dame in 2027. While Clemson will only play eight ACC games in 2027 and 2028, allowing them to keep their full non-conference slate, the Tigers are scheduled for nine ACC games in 2029, forcing them to cancel a non-conference game. Georgia faced a similar dilemma, making the cancellation a natural choice. 'I get it,' Swinney said. 'You don't have many people playing 11 Power 4 games.'
With the Georgia games removed, Clemson's 2029 schedule drops from 13 to 12 games (nine ACC games plus Notre Dame, South Carolina, and FCS Furman), and they gain a scheduling slot in 2030, 2032, and 2033, where they now have 11 of 12 games booked. Although the cancellations are logical given the current college football landscape, they are still a tough outcome. Clemson and Georgia are longtime regional rivals with campuses just 75 miles apart, and they have a rich history of 66 meetings dating back to 1897. The teams most recently played a two-game neutral-site series in Charlotte in 2021 and Atlanta in 2024, but Georgia hasn't played at Clemson since 2013, and Clemson hasn't visited Georgia since 2014. That won't change anytime soon.
'A lot of these leagues are going to nine conference games,' Swinney said. 'I wish it was less. I wish everybody played seven conference games and then you had more crossover games all throughout college football. But it is what it is.'
