The University of Cincinnati football team is set to field a drastically different wide receiver unit this season. Of the six Bearcats wideouts who recorded at least 200 receiving yards in 2025, only junior Isaiah Johnson is back with the program.
To address the departures, head coach Scott Satterfield and his staff turned to the NCAA Transfer Portal, securing commitments from five wide receiver transfers. The revamped depth chart features a mix of newcomers and returning players across the X, Z, and slot positions.
Projected Depth Chart Breakdown
At the X receiver spot, three players are expected to compete for playing time: redshirt senior JV Gibson, redshirt sophomore Elijah Jones, and redshirt senior Flynn Schiele. Gibson arrives after one season at Oklahoma, where he posted 199 yards on 18 catches. Prior to that, he played at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2024, earning FCS All-American Second Team honors after averaging 101.3 yards per game. Jones, a former three-star recruit, caught two passes for 17 yards in limited action last season. Schiele, a sixth-year player, was projected for a standout season at Division II Colorado School of Mines but suffered a season-ending injury in his first game. In 2024, he amassed 1,195 yards and 12 touchdowns on 66 receptions.
The Z spot features redshirt junior Malachi Henry, redshirt junior Larenzo Fenner, and redshirt freshman Giyahni Kontosis. Henry transferred from Central Arkansas, where he recorded 889 yards, 69 catches, and 10 touchdowns in 2025. Fenner was a touchdown machine at South Dakota, setting a school record with 15 touchdowns and ranking third in program history with 1,001 receiving yards that season. Kontosis appeared in three games last year but did not register a catch.
At the slot position, junior Isaiah Johnson is joined by redshirt sophomore Cade Wolford and sophomore Pierce Ayers. Johnson caught 14 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns in 2025, with two scores coming in a 70-0 win over Northwestern State and another in a 41-20 victory against Baylor. Wolford, a transfer from Kent State, earned All-MAC Third Team honors last season with 19 receptions for 509 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 26.8 yards per catch. Ayers comes to UC after two seasons at Wittenberg, where he did not play in his first year but had two games over 100 yards in his second.
Key Analysis
Gibson, Henry, and Johnson are expected to start at their respective positions, with Wolford utilized across the formation but primarily in the slot. The biggest challenge for this group is the lack of returning production; only Johnson remains from last year's top six wideouts. For quarterback JC French IV, also a transfer, Satterfield would have preferred more continuity. Instead, he is relying heavily on players from lower divisions to improve a passing offense that ranked 74th nationally last season, averaging 220.3 yards per game.
