Chiefs Silence Doubters with 4-0 Start, but Injury Woes Loom Large

The Kansas City Chiefs have emphatically answered the question that lingered after their stunning 6-11 campaign a year ago: their dynasty is far from over. At 4-0, the Chiefs have rebounded in convincing fashion, but they are not without their share of worries.

Historically, NFL dynasties that endured a losing season saw their run come to an end. The New England Patriots missed the playoffs in 2008 after a 16-0 season, but they still finished 11-5 and only missed the postseason via a tiebreaker. The 1982 San Francisco 49ers went 3-6 in a strike-shortened season, but that was an anomaly. For other great teams, a down year signaled the end. Kansas City, however, appears to be an exception.

The Chiefs' 4-0 start includes a victory over the previously unbeaten Las Vegas Raiders. While many believed Kansas City would bounce back, there were legitimate reasons for skepticism. The team won just six games last season, and franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL on December 14, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2026 season. Additionally, the roster faced questions, particularly at wide receiver and in the secondary, where three valuable starters departed via free agency and a trade.

Those concerns have largely been put to rest. Mahomes looks healthy and effective, and the addition of free-agent running back Kenneth Walker has given the Chiefs a dynamic they have lacked for years. Kansas City ranks third in DVOA and is fourth in offensive EPA (expected points added per play) while sitting ninth in defensive EPA allowed. Only Chicago and Jacksonville join them in the top nine in both categories.

Yet, new issues have emerged. The receiving corps is now banged up. Tyquan Thornton, who had been playing a significant role due to Xavier Worthy's minimal production in his third year, is sidelined for months with a severe ankle injury. Rashee Rice suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday. The offensive line has been without left tackle Josh Simmons all season because of an injury. Walker has been excellent, but he has never shouldered a heavy workload in the NFL and will now be asked to carry even more of the offense. If Walker wears down or gets hurt, the situation could become dire.

Every team deals with adversity, though. For the Chiefs, what matters most is that they remain undefeated and have shown promising balance through four weeks. The question that arose after last season's collapse—whether the dynasty was over—seems to have been answered.

Key Analysis

The Chiefs' resurgence is a testament to their resilience and the leadership of Mahomes, but the mounting injuries could test their depth. The team's upcoming schedule appears manageable, with a bye in Week 5 followed by matchups against the Chargers, Seahawks, Broncos, Jets, Falcons, and Cardinals. Four of those games should be favorable, and even the tougher road contests are winnable. A 4-2 stretch seems like a worst-case scenario. Kansas City isn't going anywhere—but staying healthy will be crucial.

Elsewhere in the power rankings, the San Francisco 49ers hold the top spot at 4-0, boasting the league's most efficient offense. The Seattle Seahawks sit at No. 2, while the Chiefs round out the top three. The Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chicago Bears follow, with the Bears surging thanks to a suddenly stout defense. The Ravens, Rams, Vikings, and Raiders complete the top 10.

At the bottom, the Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Los Angeles Chargers are all winless, raising questions about their quarterback situations and coaching staffs. The Dolphins' offense has been historically bad, failing to score 14 points in any game, while the Titans showed signs of life in a second-half surge against Baltimore. The Buccaneers, forced to start undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels, are in danger of a lost season, and the Chargers have dropped seven straight under Jim Harbaugh.

As the season progresses, the Chiefs' ability to overcome injuries will determine whether they can maintain their perch atop the AFC. For now, they have proven that rumors of their demise were greatly exaggerated.
