The Los Angeles Chargers have moved to reinforce their quarterback room by signing veteran Jake Browning. The transaction was prompted by the placement of Trey Lance on injured reserve, creating an immediate need for depth at the position.
Browning, who is 30 years old, had originally latched on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the previous offseason. He inked a one-year deal worth $1.3 million in the middle of March. Nevertheless, his tenure with the Buccaneers was short-lived, as he was let go on the final day of roster cuts after rookie Jalon Daniels secured the backup quarterback job.
For Browning, the Chargers represent his fourth NFL organization. His professional journey began when he signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. Although the Vikings waived him at the end of the preseason, they quickly brought him back to their practice squad.
He then signed a futures contract with Minnesota for the 2020 season, but was again waived coming out of training camp. Browning spent that entire year on the practice squad before signing another futures deal for 2021. In 2022, Minnesota released him during preseason cuts, which led to him signing with the Cincinnati Bengals.
With the Bengals, Browning served as the backup quarterback for three seasons. He appeared in 17 games and made 10 starts, compiling a 4-6 record as a starter. During that stretch, he threw for 2,707 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while completing 68.5% of his passes.
Before his NFL career, Browning spent four collegiate seasons at Washington, where he was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2016. He was born and raised in Folsom, California.
Key Analysis
The Chargers' decision to sign Browning addresses an urgent need for experienced depth behind the starter. With Trey Lance sidelined, Browning brings a proven track record as a reliable backup, having started 10 games for the Bengals over the past three seasons. His familiarity with NFL systems and ability to step in if called upon could prove valuable for Los Angeles as they navigate the upcoming season.
