The Boston Celtics are bringing an overpaid former Philadelphia 76ers forward on board in stunning fashion.
Per the 18-time NBA champions' July 6 press release, their mind-blowing blockbuster trade with the 76ers is a done deal.
The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired nine-time NBA All-Star and six-time All-NBA selection Paul George as well as future draft pick compensation from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, the franchises press release stated.
The draft compensation is as follows: A 2028 first round pick (the LA Clippers own) that, if it is top 16, instead becomes the unprotected right for Boston to swap its currently-held 2028 first round pick (the worst of Bostons and San Antonios) with the better of the LA Clippers or (if Philadelphias is top 8) Philadelphias 2028 first round pick; Philadelphias 2031 unprotected first round pick; the most favorable 2028 second round pick among Golden States (Warriors), Milwaukees (Bucks), or Oklahoma Citys (Thunder); and the most favorable 2030 second round pick among Phoenixs (Suns), Portlands (Trail Blazers), or Washingtons (Wizards).
The reason many are under the impression that the Celtics lost arguably the most notable trade of the summer thus far is because of Georges disappointing play in Philadelphia the past two seasons.
The former Indiana Pacers superstar hasnt played up to the four-year, $211 million contract he signed with the 76ers in 2024, as injuries and a steep decline as a playmaker made it reasonable to suggest hes currently overpaid.
The Fresno State product averaged 16.7 points per game in two seasons during his two-year stint with Philadelphia, shooting 43.4% from the field and 37.5% from three-point land in 78 contests.
Simply put, the Celtics shouldnt be overly optimistic about Georges future with the organization.
