CBS Sports names Florida one of college football's biggest wild cards

CBS Sports identified Florida as one of the biggest wild-card teams to watch during the 2026 season, stating that first-year head coach Jon Sumrall's program has a wide range of possible outcomes during the upcoming campaign.

Joining the Gators in this category is SEC rival Tennessee , along with Washington, Kansas State, Michigan and North Carolina State.

Sumrall has seen a wave of momentum and optimism follow him to Gainesville after leading the Tulane Wave to their first College Football Playoff berth in 2025.

Experts believe that Sumrall's culture-setting attitude and recruiting prowess could turn UF's program around in short order, with many anticipating the team will be a postseason dark horse as soon as this fall.

"The Gators are the definition of a wild-card team.

This is a relatively talented roster with some obvious question marks.

Offensively, no one is doubting running back Jadan Baugh or the overall skill at the wide receiver position, but how good is Aaron Philo? He attempted just 102 passes at Georgia Tech, and Florida needs to find answers at offensive tackle in order to keep Philo upright," says CBS Sports college football writer Austin Nivison.

It is uncommon for a transitioning head coach to have such lofty expectations.

Making the situation even more complex is the program's offseason roster overhaul that saw more than 50 new additions.

The Orange and Blue welcome a top-20 recruiting class from the 2026 cycle, featuring the likes of four-star wide receiver Davian Groce and four-star cornerback CJ Bronaugh.

Much of the conversation about the Gators' season centers on the quarterback position.

This competition, along with the cohesion of a retooled offensive line, will determine the team's trajectory.

The question isn't talent Florida routinely fields one of the most talented teams in the country.

The query is whether Sumrall can bring a new roster, two new lead coordinators, and a reshaped culture together in less than 11 months.

"Defensively, it's a similar story.

Linebacker Myles Graham and edge Jayden Woods provide Florida with firepower on that side of the ball, but are the Gators good enough along the defensive line and in the secondary to reach the playoff? The schedule, while not easy by any stretch, is a bit softer than it has been over the last couple of seasons," Nivison concludes.
