CBS Sports has sidelined its top NFL analyst, Tony Romo, effective Friday, a little over a week following his arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of drunk driving. The network announced the decision in a brief statement, saying Romo would be on leave from his broadcasting duties until further notice.
The 46-year-old former Dallas Cowboys signal-caller was pulled over on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee on Thursday, July 23, after reportedly being seen illegally passing other vehicles. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the deputy who stopped Romo noted he had "red glassy eyes" and detected an "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage." Initially, Romo claimed he had not been drinking but later conceded he had consumed at least one drink. Authorities also stated that he performed poorly on a field sobriety test.
Following the stop, deputies discovered an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle before it was towed. Body camera footage of the arrest and the field sobriety test has since gone viral. Romo is facing a charge of operating while intoxicated, a first offense that does not carry a jail sentence. His court appearance is scheduled for September 21 at 8:30 a.m.
