Leo Bernal, the St. Louis Cardinals' standout catching prospect, continued his impressive run by crushing his first home run in the Dominican Winter League on Friday night. The 22-year-old, who made a dazzling debut with the Cardinals late in the 2026 season, is now showcasing his power for Estrellas Orientales.
Bernal became a sensation in September when he was promoted from Triple-A Memphis and displayed remarkable poise and patience at the plate. In just 24 big-league games, he drove in 21 runs while launching five homers and three doubles.
Facing former Padres prospect Aaron Brooks, Bernal worked the count full before drilling a 92.9 mph sinker. The ball left his bat at 105.8 mph and traveled 372 feet for his first Dominican Winter League home run. He finished the game 2 for 5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
A native of Panama City, Panama, Bernal expressed in September his desire to play in the Dominican Winter League to get as many reps as possible and grow before Spring Training. He is joined on Estrellas by Cardinals infield prospect Cesar Prieto, who made his MLB debut in 2025 and saw more time with the Cardinals in 2026. Prieto went 2 for 6 with two RBI in Estrellas' 11-0 win.
Bernal, still ranked as the Cardinals' No. 4 prospect, batted .278 with an .831 OPS, 19 doubles, 16 homers, and 77 RBI in 101 games with Triple-A Memphis, earning his promotion. An international free-agent signee for $680,000 in January 2021, he worked his way through the Cardinals' system after spending parts of six years in the minors.
He was promoted on Aug. 31 and made his MLB debut at Dodgers Stadium on Sept. 1. In his first MLB game, he drove in two runs and then smashed a solo homer in his second game—both Cardinals wins over the Dodgers. Remarkably, he drove in 12 runs in his first 10 MLB games, a feat no other rookie in Cardinals history had accomplished.
In his final swing of the season at Busch Stadium, Bernal launched a 424-foot two-run homer off Washington Nationals reliever Yovanny Cruz. The blast left his bat at 108.5 mph and lifted the Cardinals to a 5-3 victory in their final home game of the 2026 season. Overall, in 24 MLB games, Bernal slashed .284/.333/.474/.807 with eight extra-base hits, 12 runs scored, and 21 RBI.
Key Analysis
Bernal's early success in the Dominican Winter League underscores his rapid development and potential impact for the Cardinals. His ability to adjust and excel against advanced pitching, combined with his impressive rookie campaign, suggests he could be a key contributor in the years to come. The additional reps in winter ball should only accelerate his growth as he prepares for Spring Training.
