The Vancouver Canucks have made a roster move, recalling forward Jacob Quillan from the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks, the team announced. In a corresponding transaction, Vancouver placed forward Filip Chytil on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury.
Quillan, 24, was acquired by the Canucks from the Toronto Maple Leafs a few weeks ago, along with Brandon Buhr, in exchange for Aatu Räty. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native won a National Championship at Quinnipiac University before signing with the Maple Leafs as an undrafted free agent.
During his first two professional seasons, Quillan recorded 32 goals and 73 points in 107 games with a +19 rating for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. In last year's Calder Cup playoffs, he contributed three goals and nine points in 19 games, helping the Marlies win the championship. Quillan also made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs during that period.
However, his NHL performances were largely underwhelming, producing one goal and three points in 24 games with a -5 rating while averaging 10:04 of ice time per game. Since the trade to Abbotsford, Quillan has been on fire, scoring five goals and seven points in five games with a +8 rating.
Meanwhile, the oft-injured Chytil returns to injured reserve. The former 21st overall pick started the season on IR with a shoulder ailment. In the Canucks' recent game against the San Jose Sharks, Chytil absorbed a hard hit along the boards from Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse. He will be eligible to return next Thursday when Vancouver takes on the Winnipeg Jets. Chytil has recorded two assists in seven games between injuries.
Key Analysis
The Canucks are banking on Quillan's recent AHL success to provide secondary scoring, while Chytil's latest injury raises concerns about his durability. Quillan's hot start in Abbotsford suggests he may be ready for another NHL opportunity, but he will need to improve upon his previous stint with Toronto. Chytil's absence leaves a void in the lineup, but his eligibility to return next week offers some relief.
