Junior Caminero delivered a pair of home runs, Jonathan Aranda registered four hits, and the Tampa Bay Rays secured a 13-9 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Monday evening.
Richie Palacios also went deep among his two hits, while Chandler Simpson, Cedric Mullins, and Taylor Walls each contributed two hits. Ian Seymour turned in a solid start, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings, striking out nine and issuing no walks.
Ezequiel Tovar homered and singled three times, Mickey Moniak added a home run and a triple, and Kyle Karros, Cole Carrigg, and Willi Castro each recorded two hits for Colorado.
The Rays took control early, scoring in each of the first four innings. Caminero's first homer, a two-run shot in the opening frame, gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead against Michael Lorenzen. The visitors broke the game open in the second inning when Simpson and Palacios singled, and Kenny Piper, making his major league debut, walked to load the bases. Walls then drove in two with a single to right, Piper scored on Yandy Diaz's sacrifice fly, and Walls crossed the plate on Aranda's RBI single to make it 6-0.
In the third, Mullins drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on Simpson's single. Lorenzen was lifted after allowing seven runs on seven hits in three innings. Tovar led off the bottom of the third with his ninth homer of the season, but Caminero answered in the fourth with his second long ball of the game and 32nd of the year.
Late Innings Drama
The Rays added two runs in the seventh to stretch the lead to 10-2, but the Rockies rallied with two runs in their half on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Karros. Tampa Bay responded with a run in the eighth, but Moniak led off the bottom of the frame with a 447-foot blast to right, his 18th homer. Palacios hit a two-run homer in the ninth, yet Colorado scored four in its final at-bat. Kevin Kelly entered with a runner on and retired TJ Rumfield on one pitch to end the game.
