After being nearly invisible in the New York Giants' 34-27 defeat to the New Orleans Saints in Week 6, running back Cam Skattebo seems set to receive a heavier workload once again. The former Arizona State standout has returned to the team's running back rotation following an impressive week of practice, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan.
"It's been good, you know," Skattebo said, per Raanan. "I think I got taught a lesson. I don't know if that's from them or from myself, but I kind of had to step back and look at it and figure out why I was doing the things I was doing, what was happening. Came to practice, corrected those things, worked on them. Ready to go back out there and play ball."
Skattebo had paced the Giants in rushing yards in each of the season's first five games, but a fumble in Week 5 apparently triggered a sharp reduction in his snaps the following week against New Orleans. Instead, newcomer quarterback JJ McCarthy led New York on the ground in that contest with just 26 rushing yards.
Following the release of Najee Harris, the Giants' running back room now consists of Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary. The 24-year-old Skattebo has accumulated 294 rushing yards and one touchdown on 81 carries this season, and he appears to recognize that his production has yet to meet his own standards.
"I didn't do anything yet," Skattebo said. "I took care of the ball during practice, and whatever my role is on Sunday is going to be my role and I'm going to give it everything I've got."
Key Analysis
New York will travel to Reliant Stadium in Houston this Sunday to face the Texans, aiming to snap a two-game winless streak and bolster its NFC East-leading 3-2-1 record. Skattebo's return to form could provide a crucial boost to a Giants ground game that has struggled to find consistency in recent weeks.
