Caleb Bonemer Shines in Arizona Fall League as White Sox Prospects Dazzle and Struggle

As the Major League Baseball season winds down, minor leaguers are still getting valuable reps in the Arizona Fall League, which runs through mid-November. Several Chicago White Sox prospects are participating in the prestigious circuit, including five members of the organization's top-30 prospect list: Caleb Bonemer, Colby Shelton, Anthony DePino, Pierce George, and Mathias LaCombe.

The Glendale Desert Dogs, the Fall League team featuring these White Sox prospects, currently hold a 5-12 record, the worst among the six teams in the league, and are essentially eliminated from playoff contention. Despite the team's struggles, the individual performances of Chicago's prospects warrant a closer look.

Caleb Bonemer Impresses Before Early Exit

Caleb Bonemer, the No. 2 prospect in the White Sox system and No. 27 overall in baseball, was the Desert Dogs' most productive player. According to MLB.com's Sam Dykstra, Bonemer will leave the Fall League after 13 games, a decision that makes sense given his workload. In 132 games between High-A and Double-A this season, Bonemer slashed .251/.380/.550 with 37 home runs and 92 RBI. He continued to rake in Arizona, posting a .286/.364/.633 line with three home runs and nine extra-base hits in 13 games. He also saw extensive action in center field, playing 12 games in the outfield and gaining valuable defensive reps. While his defense wasn't flawless, the experience was beneficial. With 145 total games played in 2026, Bonemer is likely fatigued, so shutting him down early is a prudent move. Fans can take comfort in knowing he is healthy.

Colby Shelton Struggles After Strong Season

After Bonemer, there is a noticeable drop-off in performance among the White Sox contingent. Colby Shelton, the No. 23 prospect in the system, has struggled in the Fall League, slashing .206/.310/.294 with just one home run in 12 games. This comes on the heels of a solid regular season in which he hit .244/.338/.488 with 24 home runs.

Anthony DePino Yet to Appear

Anthony DePino, Chicago's No. 21 prospect, has not yet taken an at-bat in the Fall League despite a strong 2026 campaign in which he slashed .262/.363/.481 with 25 home runs.

Pierce George Sees Limited Action

On the pitching side, Pierce George, the No. 18 prospect, has made just one appearance, allowing one run on no hits with three walks and one strikeout in 0.2 innings.

Mathias LaCombe Falls Short of Expectations

Mathias LaCombe, the highest-ranked prospect in the Fall League class after Bonemer at No. 17, has not matched his late-season form from 2026. In five games (six innings), the French-born right-hander has surrendered four runs on five hits and five walks. LaCombe was expected to perform at a higher level in Arizona but has yet to meet those expectations.

Bonus: Nick Altermatt Turns Heads

One unranked prospect making noise is Nick Altermatt. In six games (4.2 innings), Altermatt has allowed just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven. If he can carry this success into 2027, he could emerge as a prospect to watch.
