When ESPN's College GameDay broadcasts from Provo, Utah, on Saturday, Oct. 17, it will mark the show's first visit to BYU's campus in more than 17 years. The last time GameDay originated from Provo was in 2009, when the Cougars suffered a 38-7 defeat to TCU. Overall, BYU has never won a game with GameDay on site, having appeared as the road team in 2025 (Lubbock, Texas), 2020 (Conway, South Carolina) and 2004 (Salt Lake City). The Cougars are hoping to reverse that trend when they host No. 2 Notre Dame in one of the season's most intriguing and unorthodox matchups.
As part of the Week 7 festivities, GameDay will select a celebrity guest picker to join the show's panel. Several prominent BYU figures could fit the bill. Here are some potential options the program might consider.
Jimmer Fredette
Fredette, a former BYU basketball sensation, would likely receive a warm reception from the fan base. Known for his deep 3-point range, often called 'Jimmer Range,' he was named national player of the year in 2011 and had his No. 32 jersey retired by the program. The 2011 NBA Draft's No. 10 overall pick, Fredette found more success overseas than in the NBA and later excelled in 3x3 basketball, earning USA Basketball 3x3 Male Athlete of the Year honors in 2023.
Steve Young
Young brings both TV experience and a legendary BYU pedigree. The left-handed quarterback led the NCAA in passing yards and passing touchdowns in 1983 before winning three Super Bowls and two NFL MVPs. Widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, he worked as an NFL analyst for ESPN, most notably on Monday Night Football, until he was part of the network's layoffs in 2023.
Jamaal Williams
Williams, a former BYU running back, would likely bring humor to the set. Known for his quirky personality, including his anime knowledge and Pokémon collection, he was a fourth-round pick in 2017 and has amassed 4,122 career rushing yards and 40 total touchdowns in the NFL. He is currently a free agent, though he recently worked out for the New England Patriots.
AJ Dybantsa
Dybantsa, the reigning No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, could be another option. The former BYU forward has his final preseason game with the Washington Wizards on Friday, Oct. 16, in New Orleans, but with a few days between the end of the preseason and the start of the NBA season, he could potentially make it to Provo in time. As a true freshman in 2025-26, he averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game for the Cougars.
Danny Ainge
Ainge, another BYU legend, is currently the CEO of basketball operations for the Utah Jazz. He won two NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in 1984 and 1986 after a standout career at BYU. Like Fredette, Ainge had his jersey (No. 22) retired after winning national player of the year honors in 1981. A three-time All-American, he once held the NCAA record for scoring in double figures in 112 consecutive games.
