CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow's record-setting performance in the Bengals' 43-36 rollercoaster win over the Titans was a tale of extremes: brilliance and frustration in equal measure. The Cincinnati quarterback threw for 462 yards, five touchdowns (one rushing), and three interceptions, becoming just the second quarterback in NFL history to achieve at least 450 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown in a single game, and the first in 75 years. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Norm Van Brocklin in 1951, who set the NFL record with 554 passing yards in that game.
"Yeah, a lot of good and a lot of bad today," Burrow said of the historic mark, offering a brief reaction to the statistical milestone. The Bengals' leader was more concerned with how his team can execute better and avoid committing four turnovers overall. "Yeah, that's always the difficult part of games in this league," Burrow said. "It's never going to be a perfect game, and certainly going to enjoy it today. And then we'll come in tomorrow and learn from our mistakes and try to get better. Then get back to it and we'll fly to Madrid and get back to practice on Tuesday and try to get better."
Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase had a big day with 11 catches for 141 yards and a score, but he still showed visible frustration with Cincinnati's execution, particularly the team's slow starts of late. "I don't know," Chase told The Enquirer. "Ask Zac (Taylor). That's not my job, ask Zac." Burrow, however, isn't worried about his top target as the team prepares to head to Madrid in a couple of days. "I don't think I need to make sure about that. You know, he's a pro, and guys get emotional sometimes. That's how it is. I like when he gets emotional like that. That usually means that I need to do a better job of throwing the ball, and sometimes that's a good reminder," Burrow said.
Key Analysis
Despite his third career game with three interceptions, Burrow remains a leading contender and should still be in the thick of the MVP race. He did more than enough to win, showcasing his clutch factor on not one but two drives in the fourth quarter and overtime. He finally got a defense to steel up at the right moment, and the entire team now looks to clean things up before facing the Falcons next Sunday morning.
