Brewers Executive Cam Castro Tapped as New Athletics General Manager

The Milwaukee Brewers are experiencing a front-office exodus, with another key executive departing for a larger role elsewhere. According to reporting from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, Cam Castro, a senior vice president in the Brewers' organization, will take over as general manager of the Athletics.

Castro will report directly to Taylor Smith, the Athletics' president of baseball operations, and will be the second-in-command in the team's baseball operations department. The Athletics, currently without a city in their name, are playing home games in Sacramento, California, and plan to move into a new ballpark in Las Vegas by 2028.

During his time in Milwaukee, Castro held the title of Senior Vice President - Player Development and Performance. He originally joined the Brewers in 2019 as a minor-league pitching coach for the Class A Carolina Mudcats, where he worked with future major-leaguers such as Aaron Ashby and Drew Rasmussen. He later served as minor-league pitching coordinator and director of pitching development before being promoted to vice president. Before his Brewers tenure, Castro was the head baseball coach at Lake Erie College, an NCAA Division II program, and also worked at Driveline, a well-known baseball training organization.

Key Analysis

Castro's departure may not be the last for the Brewers. Another top executive, Matt Kleine, reportedly emerged as the Houston Astros' preferred candidate for their general manager vacancy, though Houston eventually hired Randy Flores from the St. Louis Cardinals. According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, Kleine was offered the Astros' job but chose to remain with Milwaukee. The Brewers' recent success has made their front-office staff attractive to other teams, and the loss of Castro is a reminder of the cost of winning.
