Major League Baseball's trade deadline is approaching, but those hoping for a marquee move will need to wait a bit longer. Instead, the most notable transaction on Saturday morning was a four-player swap between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cleveland Guardians.
The Brewers, who currently sit atop the National League Central, acquired catcher Bo Naylor and relief pitcher Codi Heuer from the Guardians. In exchange, Cleveland received outfielder Blake Perkins and reliever Craig Yoho, as confirmed by both clubs.
Naylor, 26, is having a challenging season, posting a slash line of .143/.200/.4238 with 90 plate appearances across 28 games. He is the younger brother of Seattle Mariners star Josh Naylor. With William Contreras and former Yankee Gary Sanchez already handling catching duties in Milwaukee, Naylor is expected to report to Triple-A to provide organizational depth.
Heuer, 30, has appeared in only eight games for Cleveland this year and has struggled to establish himself at the major league level. If he joins the Brewers' roster, it would mark his sixth big-league team.
Perkins, meanwhile, is a career .223 hitter with a .636 OPS, but he is currently enduring a career-worst slash line of .157/.250/.258 in 101 plate appearances over 55 games. Yoho, who is in just his second year, has posted a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings this season and offers considerable team control.
Trade Deadline Outlook
While this deal addresses depth needs for both sides, the baseball world is still anticipating a significant move. The Brewers are reportedly in the mix for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, though the Los Angeles Dodgers are considered the frontrunners in that sweepstakes.
