In a surprising twist, the Atlanta Braves turned a disappointing loss into a strategic advantage. Manager Walt Weiss disclosed that the team's 5-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLDS actually helped them secure a split in Los Angeles by preserving their best relievers for Game 2.
The Braves found themselves in a tough spot after the Wild Card round stretched their pitching staff thin. Chris Sale, who had to come out of the bullpen in Game 3 against the Philadelphia Phillies to close out that series, was unavailable to start until Game 3 of the NLDS at the earliest. That left the Braves scrambling for Game 1, which they lost.
However, with the game slipping away, Weiss made a calculated decision to save his top bullpen arms for the next game. The fresh relievers then powered Atlanta to a victory in Game 2, evening the series as it shifts to Truist Park.
"I think losing the way we did [Saturday] allowed us to do what we did tonight and gain the split," Weiss said on Sunday, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The gamble paid off. Sale is now fully rested and ready to start Game 3 on Tuesday. Pushing him to pitch on short rest in Game 2 could have diminished his effectiveness. Additionally, according to Nightengale, Sale should be available out of the bullpen for a potential Game 5.
"We didn't want to have a diminished Chris Sale twice. It didn't make sense to us. To us, it's the best case scenario as we possibly can. Now, we have a fresh Chris Sale ready to go," Weiss added.
Game 3 of the Braves-Dodgers NLDS is scheduled for 6:00 PM E.T. on Tuesday night.
Key Analysis
The Braves' ability to pivot from a loss and optimize their pitching resources demonstrates smart in-game management. By sacrificing Game 1, they set themselves up for better odds in the subsequent games, highlighting the strategic depth required in postseason baseball.
