Braves Reliever Joel Payamps Hits Free Agency Following Playoff Exit

The Atlanta Braves saw their season come to an end in the National League Division Series, where the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated them three games to one. The Dodgers have moved on to the National League Championship Series, where they currently trail the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. Meanwhile, the American League Championship Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians is knotted at 1-1.

In the midst of the postseason action, the Braves experienced a roster departure as 32-year-old right-hander Joel Payamps elected free agency on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Payamps's Journey to Atlanta

Payamps was claimed off waivers by the Braves from the Milwaukee Brewers late last season. He made two appearances for Atlanta in September 2025. After electing free agency last offseason, he re-signed with the Braves for the 2026 season. During the 2025 campaign, Payamps struggled to an 8.22 ERA with nine strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings in 12 outings.

Career Overview

Payamps originally broke into the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019, making four appearances across the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He then spent 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, and also pitched for the Royals in 2022. Later in 2022, he suited up for the Oakland Athletics. From 2023 through late 2025, Payamps pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers. Over his eight-year career, he has compiled a 3.55 ERA with 253 strikeouts in 276 2/3 innings. He also gained postseason experience with the Brewers in 2023 and 2024, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in his lone 2023 playoff appearance, but allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings across two postseason games the following year.
