After a period of public outbursts followed by extended silence, Brandon Aiyuk has signaled his desire to return to the NFL. The 28-year-old wide receiver, who has been on the San Francisco 49ers' reserve/left squad list since December, hired agent Drew Rosenhaus for representation on Monday, as reported by ESPN.
Rosenhaus informed ESPN that he is "working on getting (Aiyuk) back to work and playing again in the NFL." Aiyuk's most recent NFL appearance was on Oct. 20, 2024, when a knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs ended his season.
Although Aiyuk was anticipated to recover fully and rejoin the 49ers for the 2025 season, that scenario did not materialize. The relationship between player and team deteriorated over several years, ultimately reaching a breaking point last season. Aiyuk is no longer permitted at the team facility.
General manager John Lynch stated in January that the 2020 first-round pick would never play another snap for the Niners. The sentiment is shared by Aiyuk, who has made it evident over the past year that he wants no involvement with Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan, or anyone within the organization.
In a June YouTube video, Aiyuk delivered a profanity-laced tirade, saying, "We is not cool. We won't be cool," to express his disdain for Lynch and Shanahan. Since then, mentioning Aiyuk's name inside the 49ers' building has become taboo. Shanahan's last public comments about Aiyuk came on Sept. 20 after a win over the Miami Dolphins, when asked if Aiyuk could provide depth amid growing wide receiver injuries. Shanahan's response was a quick "No."
The era of Aiyuk catching passes from Brock Purdy is firmly in the past. For Aiyuk to complete an NFL comeback, he and his agent must handle one more procedural step with the 49ers, who retain his rights. San Francisco would need to release Aiyuk after he applies for reinstatement with the NFL, after which he would be free to sign with any team.
Key Analysis
Aiyuk's decision to hire Rosenhaus marks a crucial move toward resurrecting his career, but the path forward requires cooperation from the 49ers. The team holds his rights and must release him upon reinstatement, a process that could be complicated by the fractured relationship. Aiyuk's talent is undeniable, but his return will depend on navigating the business side and finding a new team willing to take a chance on him.
