The latter portion of Boston College's 2026 football schedule presents a formidable challenge, beginning with a trip to Durham, North Carolina, to take on the Duke Blue Devils on Halloween. This matchup will be the Eagles' first against Duke since the 2020 campaign, and it comes after the Blue Devils enjoyed a breakout 2025 season.
Duke finished the regular season with a 7-5 record, but a tiebreaker advantage propelled them into the ACC Championship game, where they upset No. 16 Virginia 27-20 to claim the conference title. They followed that with a thrilling 42-39 victory over Arizona State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, ending the year at 9-5. The Blue Devils' success was largely fueled by quarterback Darian Mensah, who threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns with a 76.6 quarterback rating in his second year as starter. However, Mensah has moved on, leaving head coach Manny Diaz to find a new signal-caller.
Stepping into the spotlight is Walker Eget, a sixth-year senior transfer from San Jose State. Eget started for two seasons with the Spartans, amassing 5,563 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. While his interception total raises concerns, his experience and solid build make him the frontrunner. Redshirt freshman Dan Mahan, a highly touted recruit from North Carolina, could also see playing time, having been ranked as the No. 9 prospect in the state and the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback nationally in the 2024 class.
Key Additions and Returners
Eget's primary target is expected to be Jared Richardson, a graduate transfer from Penn, who recorded 193 receptions for 2,505 yards and 27 touchdowns over four years with the Quakers. Charlotte transfer Javen Nicholas, who led the 49ers in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns in 2025, will also be a key weapon in offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer's air-raid system. Tight end Jeremiah Hasley returns as a red-zone threat, while running back Nate Sheppard, a true freshman All-American, is arguably Duke's most dynamic player. Sheppard rushed for 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns on 5.7 yards per carry, adding 286 receiving yards and a touchdown on 37 catches.
Defensively, the Blue Devils lost safety Caleb Weaver, their leading tackler, but have bolstered the secondary with transfers Dylan Flowers (Western Kentucky), Patrick Smith-Young (North Texas), Kyon Loud (Montana), and Che Ojarikre (Stanford). Graduate linebacker Luke Mergott returns after a stellar 2025 season with 90 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, three pass breakups, nine quarterback hits, and two fumble recoveries. Redshirt-junior safety DeShawn Stone also returns, having recorded 86 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, two interceptions, and three PBUs.
The defensive line is a major question mark after losing key contributors Aaron Hall, Wesley Williams, Josiah Green, and Vincent Anthony Jr., who combined for 40.0 TFLs and 15.5 sacks. Penn State transfer Owen Wafle, a former four-star recruit who began at Michigan, hopes to finally earn significant playing time after limited action in his first two years.
Duke faces the 46th-toughest schedule in the nation, with an initial FPI ranking of 52. Their non-conference slate includes Tulane, Illinois, and William & Mary. While Duke has lost many core pieces, Diaz has a track record of adapting his schemes to maximize player strengths. Among Boston College's final five opponents, Duke appears to be the most manageable on paper, but the road environment adds difficulty, making it far from a guaranteed victory.
