Bills Urged to Pursue Buccaneers' Antoine Winfield in Trade to Fix Secondary

The Buffalo Bills are in the market for safety help, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have emerged as a potential trade partner. According to Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker, the Bills should target safety Antoine Winfield in a hypothetical trade.

Buffalo's current safety duo of C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Cole Bishop has been underwhelming in 2026. Gardner-Johnson, in particular, has been a liability, culminating in a Week 6 incident where he spat on an opponent and was ejected and suspended. If either player misses extended time, defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard would be forced to rely on Damar Hamlin, who is not starter material, and Jalon Kilgore, who has a limited sample size. At the very least, the Bills need veteran depth, but general manager Brandon Beane should aim higher.

Why Winfield Fits

Winfield, a two-time Pro Bowler, is one of the NFL's most versatile safeties. He excels as a free safety in coverage but can also play in the box as a stout run defender and effective blitzer. Adding him would allow Buffalo to push either Bishop or Gardner-Johnson down the depth chart, as both are capable of playing in the box. The result would be a deeper and more talented safety room.

However, acquiring Winfield won't be easy. He is under contract through next season and carries a $27.8 million dead cap hit if traded, making a deal improbable. But if the Buccaneers decide to rebuild after a dismal 1-5 start, they might consider moving him. Head coach Todd Bowles is on the hot seat, and Winfield would be one of their most attractive trade chips, potentially yielding a significant return to aid a rebuild.

Key Analysis

For the Bills, trading for Winfield represents the kind of bold move Beane needs to make. As long as the price isn't exorbitant, Winfield's addition could transform Buffalo's secondary and solidify their defense for a playoff push.
