Big Ten and Independents Steal Week 7 College Football Spotlight from SEC

Week 7 of the college football season delivered a thrilling slate with four top-10 teams suffering defeats and several stunning upsets, drawing significant television audiences. While the SEC typically dominates viewership, this week's numbers revealed a different conference claiming the most-watched matchup.

Based on data from On3 and Nielsen's Big Data + Panel Data, an eight-figure viewership game led the nation. FOX's broadcast of the top-five showdown between Ohio State and Indiana attracted an estimated 10.4 million viewers, securing the weekend's top spot. Notably, the second most-watched game also did not feature an SEC team, as ABC's evening telecast of BYU versus Notre Dame drew 9.2 million viewers.

SEC's Week 7 Viewership

The SEC's highest viewership for Week 7 came from the annual clash between Alabama and Tennessee, which drew 8.1 million watchers. The conference had two other significantly watched games: Florida's upset victory over Texas pulled in 4.7 million viewers, ranking fourth for the weekend, while Auburn's upset of previously No. 1 Georgia finished seventh with approximately 3.5 million viewers.

Big Ten's Strong Showing

In many respects, the Big Ten dominated the week. Along with the nation's top-viewed game, the conference also claimed the No. 5 spot with the matchup between traditional powers Penn State and Michigan on CBS, which drew 4.5 million viewers. Wisconsin vs. Purdue (No. 8, 2.6 million) and Nebraska vs. Oregon (No. 9, 2.5 million) also made the top 10.

ACC and Big 12 Representation

The ACC was represented by Miami's double-overtime thriller against Florida State. Despite the high drama, the ESPN telecast drew just 3.6 million viewers, good for sixth best on the week. The Big 12 was represented by BYU in the No. 2 game and by Arizona State's matchup with Texas Tech, which rounded out the top 10 with about 2.5 million viewers.

Week 8 TV Outlook

After an exciting Week 7, the Week 8 slate appears to be lower-impact. Six of the top 25 teams are off as the midseason stretch continues. Only two top-25 battles are scheduled, down from six a week ago: Ole Miss traveling to Texas on ABC and Houston facing Utah on ESPN.
