Big Ten Admits Officiating Blunder in UCLA-Oregon Thriller

The Big Ten conference has acknowledged a significant officiating error that occurred during a pivotal moment in Saturday's UCLA-Oregon football game, a mistake that could have far-reaching consequences for the conference title race and the national championship picture.

The error took place in Eugene on Saturday afternoon, specifically on Oregon's two-point conversion attempt that had the potential to tie the game at 17-17 with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.

In the end, the Ducks' conversion attempt failed, and UCLA secured a dramatic 17-15 victory at Autzen Stadium, improving their record to 5-0. Meanwhile, Oregon dropped to 3-2, making the officiating mistake even more critical, as the Ducks' path to a national championship is now in jeopardy.

According to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, the Big Ten admitted the error on Sunday: "Big Ten officials incorrectly officiated Oregon's final two-point conversion attempt," Thamel wrote in a social media post on Sunday afternoon.

The sequence began when Brock Thomas connected with Evan Stewart on a 44-yard touchdown pass that brought Oregon within two points. The Ducks then attempted a two-point conversion to tie the game. However, after UCLA was penalized for a facemask on the initial attempt, giving Oregon another try from half a yard out, the Bruins' defense tackled Oregon running back Jordon Davison short of the goal line to preserve the lead.

UCLA escaped with the win, but a day later, the Big Ten acknowledged that the play should have been officiated differently. According to Thamel's report, the explanation provided was: "Following the first attempt that resulted in a personal foul penalty for a facemask on the UCLA defense, the ball was spotted for the second attempt half-the-distance to the goal from the original line of scrimmage of the first attempt. Per rule, the ball should have been spotted half-the-distance to the goal from the end of the run of the first attempt."

This officiating mistake could have major repercussions on the College Football Playoff field in December, with Oregon suffering a second loss and UCLA remaining undefeated.
