The Chicago Bears have touched down in Badalona, Spain, continuing their international efforts to promote flag football. Leading the charge is former offensive lineman Roberto Garza, who is conducting clinics for local youth. This marks the fourth consecutive year the franchise has organized such events in the country, arriving just days before the Bears host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Soldier Field on Sunday.
Garza, addressing fans, mentioned that this is his third visit to Spain with the team and noted that each trip feels increasingly rewarding. The group has already spent approximately two weeks in the country, hosting clinics for hundreds of children across four cities. The club's goal is to build enthusiasm ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where flag football will make its debut.
A Different Kind of Game
The tour began in Bilbao, a smaller city nestled in the mountains, where Garza described the atmosphere as slower and quite distinct from home. The Bears collaborated with Athletic Club, a local soccer team, to utilize their facilities, giving kids the opportunity to train at a professional team's home. The Bears even attended a match at the stadium before departing, with Garza watching from the President's box and calling it an honor. He observed the high energy but noted the differences from American football: in soccer, fans typically remain in their seats for the full 45-minute halves, staying engaged due to the rarity of scoring, whereas at home, fans often move around during the game. The Bears appreciated the hospitality and unique atmosphere of the Spanish league.
Growing the Flag Football League
After Bilbao, the group moved to Barcelona and Badalona for more clinics. These areas have hosted recurring events with the Barcelona Dragons tackle team, and a local flag football league operates in the region. Organizers informed the Bears that the league has grown about four times in size since its inception, a surge that aligns with the sport's addition to the Olympic program. Garza sees a clear rise in interest from local boys and girls, some of whom are even looking to come to the United States to play in college. The former Bear believes the clinics help open those doors for more kids.
Looking Ahead to Sunday
The Bears are wrapping up their European tour as the NFL season heats up. The team returns to Chicago to prepare for their next matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Nov. 8, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET at Soldier Field. This game follows a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, Nov. 2. The clinics in Badalona and Barcelona exemplify how the game is expanding beyond the U.S.
