Bears Could Reunite with Khalil Mack for a Fifth-Round Pick, per Report

As the Chicago Bears sit at 2-2 heading into Week 5, they appear poised to act as buyers at the trade deadline, provided they avoid a significant downturn over the next month. Should they remain in contention by early November, one of the most apparent areas to address would be the edge rusher spot. Fortunately, a viable option may already be on the market.

Jonathan Jones of The Athletic has connected the Bears to Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack in what could be a compelling reunion. Jones also reported that Mack's projected trade value sits at a very affordable fifth-round pick.

In Jones's words: "But Khalil Mack to Chicago is something multiple league sources told me makes the most sense if both teams continue on their respective trajectories." With Chicago emerging as an obvious landing spot, it's worth examining what it might cost to bring the veteran pass rusher back from the Chargers.

Jones added that "one GM and one assistant GM on different teams slotted Mack's value as worthy of a fifth-round pick." Chicago can absorb that cost, and with the 0-4 Chargers likely to be sellers by the November deadline, a fifth-round swap for Mack seems entirely logical.

Key Analysis

Of course, another pass-rush-needy team could outbid the Bears, but no destination appears more sensible for Mack this season. He previously spent part of his long NFL career with Chicago, and the Bears clearly need help getting after the quarterback. With the cap space to facilitate a trade and the fifth-round valuation in place, a deal for Mack would make considerable sense for Chicago.

The primary obstacle remains whether the Chargers decide to sell. A Week 5 loss to the Denver Broncos could actually benefit the Bears, as it would likely increase the chances of Mack being made available. As long as general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears are willing to part with a fifth-round pick—and perhaps more—to acquire Mack, they should have a realistic shot at landing the potential future Hall of Famer.
