For head coach Scott Satterfield and quarterback JC French, this week carries extra weight as the Cincinnati Bearcats prepare for their rivalry clash with the Miami RedHawks. The two teams will meet for the 129th time on Saturday at TQL Stadium in Over-the-Rhine, marking the Bearcats' first game outside Nippert Stadium this season and their first-ever appearance at the venue.
The Battle for the Victory Bell, a series that began in 1888, holds no future scheduled matchups beyond this year, amplifying the stakes for both programs. Satterfield underscored the game's historical significance: "We all know what this means. 129th meeting; I think it's 61-60-7. It's been played since 1800, so it's a lot of history that goes along with this game. Really getting across to the new guys the importance of this game."
Satterfield also expressed enthusiasm about the unique setting. "So obviously excited about this game, being able to play it. We didn't play it last year. One unique thing about it is we're playing at TQL Stadium. That's different. We have never played there, so we're looking forward to playing in that venue as well. Having seen a soccer game there, I think it's really cool for fans. I think it'll be a great experience to be able to watch a football game in that stadium."
The venue presents a novel experience for many players, as most will be playing on natural grass for the first time. The intimate seating arrangement, with some seats so close to the field that fans' feet nearly touch the turf, adds to the atmosphere. Yet, as Satterfield noted, the game itself remains unchanged once the action begins.
French, who spoke on Monday, admitted he was initially unfamiliar with the rivalry but has quickly grasped its importance. "Coming into it, I didn't know too much, but obviously we're emphasizing a lot this week. It means a lot to us and the fans," he said. "So I think it's one of the best rivalries in college football. So I'm excited to be a part of it."
Cincinnati enters the matchup with a 2-0 record, aiming to start 3-0 for the first time since 2021—which would mark the eighth such start this century. The program understands the value of bowl appearances in the current financial landscape; in six of the seven previous 3-0 starts, the Bearcats went on to play in a bowl game.
Key Analysis
The Bearcats' pursuit of a 3-0 start is not just about early-season momentum; it is a strategic move to secure bowl eligibility and maximize revenue in an increasingly competitive college football environment. With the rivalry game lacking future scheduled meetings, this edition could serve as a pivotal moment for both programs, adding another layer of intensity to an already historic matchup.
