Avalanche Crush Blues 6-1 as Necas Shines with Three Points

In a dominant display at Ball Arena on Saturday night, the Colorado Avalanche overpowered the St. Louis Blues with a 6-1 victory. Martin Necas led the charge with two goals and an assist, while Nathan MacKinnon contributed three assists to fuel the offensive onslaught.

Nicolas Roy, Artturi Lehkonen, and Josh Manson each recorded a goal and an assist, and Cale Makar also found the back of the net for Colorado, which has started the season impressively. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves, and Parker Kelly chipped in with two assists. The Avalanche have now tallied 14 goals in sweeping their two-game homestand to open the campaign.

For St. Louis, Dalibor Dvorsky scored for the second consecutive night, but it was not enough to overcome a barrage of Colorado goals. The Blues were playing the second half of a back-to-back after shutting out the Dallas Stars 4-0 on Friday night.

Jordan Binnington stopped 30 shots for the Blues but was plagued by two costly turnovers that directly led to Avalanche goals. The first miscue came early in the second period after Manson's goal had given Colorado a 3-0 lead. Binnington attempted to clear the puck up the middle, but Lehkonen intercepted it in the slot and deposited it into the open net at 11:40.

Colorado then put the game out of reach with two late second-period goals. Roy's one-timer at 18:02 beat Binnington on the short side. Just 23 seconds later, Binnington misplayed the puck behind his net, allowing Necas to score his second of the night. Binnington has now allowed six goals in his last two starts against the Avalanche, with the previous meeting coming on New Year's Eve 2025 in Denver.

The Avalanche opened the scoring at 4:09 of the first period when MacKinnon fed Necas in front, who quickly slid the puck to Makar at the right of the crease, and Makar lifted it over Binnington's pads. Necas struck again later in the period, capitalizing on a turnover forced by Lehkonen in the offensive zone. Lehkonen sent the puck to MacKinnon, whose cross-zone pass found Necas at the left circle, and Necas wristed a shot to the far post at 13:12.

Dvorsky spoiled Blackwood's shutout bid with a goal at 2:34 of the third period, but it was merely a consolation marker for the Blues.

Key Analysis

The Avalanche's explosive offense and opportunistic forechecking proved too much for the Blues, who struggled with puck management. Binnington's turnovers were pivotal, turning a competitive game into a blowout. Colorado's fast start to the season, with 14 goals in two games, signals they will be a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference.
