Astros Offseason: Trading Isaac Paredes Could Pave Way for Carlos Correa's Return

As the Houston Astros search for a new general manager and manager following the departures of Dana Brown and Joe Espada, they must also address a crowded infield situation. The Athletic's Chandler Rome has proposed a solution: trading Isaac Paredes to make room for Carlos Correa at third base.

Rome suggests that if the Astros wish to retain homegrown shortstop Jeremy Peña, dealing Paredes would allow Correa to return to his natural position at the hot corner. Such a move could also yield a solid return before Paredes reaches his platform year. Paredes, 27, has a $13.35 million club option for 2027 that Rome calls a "no-brainer" to exercise.

The two-time All-Star posted a 4.0 bWAR and 127 OPS+ in 2025, hitting 25 home runs and driving in 94 runs over 155 games. Correa, who turned 32 last month, has been limited to 397 of 648 possible games since the start of the 2023 season and is under contract through 2028, raising health concerns. While trading Paredes could leave the Astros thin at third base, it may be the best way to resolve the logjam and accommodate Correa's return.

Key Analysis

The Astros' infield dilemma centers on balancing Correa's health risks with Paredes' trade value. Keeping Peña at shortstop and Correa at third base would require moving Paredes, whose contract option and strong performance make him an attractive asset. However, dealing him could create a hole at third base if Correa's injury issues persist. The decision will significantly impact Houston's roster construction as they aim to defend their AL West title.
