One year removed from a Final Four appearance and seeing several players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, Arizona is still expected to be a dominant force in college basketball.
Sophomore Ivan Kharchenkov is a significant reason for that optimism, as he slides seamlessly between the team's talented guards and big men.
Scouting Report
At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, Kharchenkov possesses ideal size for both the college and professional ranks. His combination of strength and speed, coupled with impressive athleticism, makes him a viable wing at the next level.
Primarily an off-wing player, Kharchenkov can also slide into multiple positions from one through three. While he won't be a primary ball-handler, his playmaking ability allows him to contribute in various ways on the stat sheet.
Defensively, Kharchenkov made an immediate impact as a freshman, averaging 1.4 steals per game with pesky point-of-attack defense. He and five-star recruit Caleb Holt are expected to form a formidable perimeter duo this season.
As a passer, Kharchenkov shows excellent instincts for an off-ball wing, averaging 2.3 assists against just 1.5 turnovers. He'll aim to improve both numbers in his sophomore campaign.
Key Areas for Growth
To solidify his NBA prospects, Kharchenkov must increase his 3-point shooting volume and efficiency. As a freshman, he attempted just 2.7 per game and connected at a 32% clip. Both metrics need a boost in Year 2.
While scoring over 10 points per game as a freshman, Kharchenkov still needs to establish a consistent scoring identity. He thrived in spot-up situations and transition opportunities but could enhance his production in those areas.
Outlook
Kharchenkov may not be the most flashy player in the 2027 class, but he offers NBA teams a valuable role player with size, versatility, solid defense, and basketball IQ. A lottery selection is unlikely without a major leap, but it's not entirely out of the question given Arizona's talent-rich roster.
Projected as a mid-first to early-second round pick, Kharchenkov is an impact wing with swing skills, particularly shooting. His development will be crucial for both Arizona's championship aspirations and his own professional future.
