PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Antwan Raymond exploded for 140 rushing yards and three touchdowns, powering Rutgers to a 58-7 dismantling of Howard on Friday night. The victory marked the 100th career win for Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano.
Rutgers (1-3) found the end zone on 10 of its 12 offensive series, amassing 534 total yards. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan enjoyed a career-best performance, throwing for 214 yards and two touchdowns over three quarters against the Championship Subdivision's Bison. Lonergan had thrown five interceptions entering the contest.
KJ Duff, a preseason second-team All-America selection by The Associated Press, hauled in five receptions for 131 yards and a score. Howard (1-3) managed just 184 yards of offense, with 75 coming on a touchdown run by Eden James, son of NFL Hall of Famer Edgerrin James. James finished with 116 yards on seven carries.
The win was Schiano's 100th at Rutgers, where he holds a 100-111 record over 18 seasons across two separate stints. He joins Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Troy Calhoun (Air Force), and Kirby Smart (Georgia) as the only active Bowl Subdivision head coaches with 100 wins at their current program.
Key Analysis
Howard has historically struggled against FBS opponents, with their only win coming against UNLV in 2017 (43-40). Rutgers has now outscored the Bison 318-67 in seven all-time meetings, and Howard has been outscored 113-7 in its last two games against Indiana and Rutgers.
Duff considered transferring after a disappointing 5-7 season but opted to remain in Piscataway, a decision that has paid dividends. He became the 11th player in program history to reach 2,000 career receiving yards and the first Rutgers player to catch a touchdown in five consecutive games. He is on pace to break the school's single-season touchdown record (10) with seven scores in four games.
Rutgers entered the game allowing an average of 35.6 points per game and had turned the ball over 10 times in its first three contests. Against Howard, the Scarlet Knights committed zero turnovers, surrendered only one play over 20 yards, and recorded four sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
"It was very perplexing, very frustrating," Schiano said of the earlier turnovers. "But tonight, we took it away three times and that's what we have to do to win."
Raymond and Duff both surpassed the 2,000-yard milestone for rushing and receiving, respectively. Raymond is the 17th Scarlet Knight to reach 2,000 rushing yards since 1956.
"They (Duff and Raymond) are super players, committed players and leaders," Schiano said. "There is a lot of great football ahead of them at the college and pro levels and I'm looking forward to watching them."
Howard will host Hampton on Oct. 3, while Rutgers will welcome defending champion Indiana on the same date.
