RAYMOND It was Raymond Hall of Fame Day on Sunday at Lilleberg Field.
The 2016 state champion Raymond Rockets were to be the featured inductees.
But there was a surprise.
Raymond manager Butch Steen learned that he has been inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
ADVERTISEMENT All were honored with a pre-game ceremony in Raymonds 7-5 Corn Belt League amateur baseball victory over the Milroy Yankees.
You know, its something you dont really think about, said Steen, whose amateur baseball career as a player, coach, manager and organizer spans more than 60 years.
And today, actually, I was just focusing on this game.
There were too many things going on to worry about instead of some kind of glory.
Steen resurrected Raymond in 1989 after the Rockets didnt field a team in 1988, and has led the Rockets to 17 state tournaments, including the 2016 Class C state title team.
Along the way, he helped form the Corn Belt League and also is in the Raymond Rockets and Kandiyohi Historical Society Halls of Fame.
And thats not counting a career that includes High School Coach of the Year awards in baseball, football and wrestling over the years, or being a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
With the Rockets, Steen went into the season with a career record of 724-440.
Its nice, said Steen, who is one of six inductees into the amateur baseball hall in St.
Cloud.
But its really because of these guys.
Ive had so many darn good players for so many years, at least 20 years and they just like to play the game.
Ive been fortunate.
Also in the 2026 class of inductees is Regals Tim Beier, Roscoes Dale Mackedanz, Shakopees Gary Schleper, Greg Odegard of Arlington/Glencoe and Allen Drexler of Searles.
ADVERTISEMENT All will be honored at the annual Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Saturday, Sept.
19 at the the Rivers Edge Convention Center in St.
Cloud.
It begins with a social from 3-5 p.m.
The hall of fame is located on the second floor of the convention center and features all of the inductees going back to the inaugural class in 1961 as well as an historic timeline of state baseball and an exhibit of famous alumni like Major League Hall of Famers Joe Mauer, Paul Molitor, Jack Morris, Dave Winfield and Chief Bender who are enshrined in Cooperstown, New York.
Sunday, Butch Steen threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Rockets catcher Tyler Steen, his son.
Tyler Steen was the most valuable player of the 2016 state tournament.
He and his dad are two of seven still with the Rockets who were on the 2016 title team, including Mike Jeseritz, John Sawatzky, Brett Swanson, Zach Nelson and coach Ron Hoekstra.
Tyler Steen, Jeseritz and Swanson all started Sunday.
Eli Nelson and Esau Nelson, Zach Nelsons sons who both played Sunday, were batboys in 2016.
All my role models were in the stands today, said Raymond left fielder Brady Kienitz, whose two-out, two-run single in the eighth broke a 5-5 tie.So it was pretty cool to play in front of them.
We had to do it for Butchies big day.
Kienitz, 23, was 13 in 2016.
Hes a MACCRAY High School graduate who is now a teacher and coach in Montevideo after playing four years of basketball at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Hes the head coach of Montevideos American Legion baseball team.
Esau Nelson pitched a scoreless ninth for the save after pitching in the Coaches Association All-Star Series Friday and Saturday in Chaska.
ADVERTISEMENT Isaac Call, the former Bethel University football and baseball star, had two hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth, for Raymond.
