The Tennessee Titans made a flurry of offseason moves to strengthen their roster, but one of their marquee defensive acquisitions is already under the microscope. Cornerback Alontae Taylor, who inked a three-year, $58 million contract with Tennessee after four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, has yet to deliver the impact the team envisioned.
Five games into his Titans tenure, Taylor's performance is aligning with a bold preseason projection from ESPN. The network forecasted that Taylor would allow at least 1.4 yards per coverage snap this season. So far, he is surrendering exactly that figure, which is well above the league average of 1.1 yards for outside cornerbacks.
Those numbers are troubling for a Tennessee defense that has been unable to keep the team competitive during an 0-5 start. The Titans brought Taylor in to shore up a secondary that was ravaged by injuries last season, but his early returns have fallen short of expectations.
Allowing more yards per coverage snap than the league average is not the beginning Tennessee had hoped for from one of its key offseason additions. As the team searches for its first win, Taylor will need to find greater consistency in coverage.
For now, ESPN's prediction remains on track, and Taylor has the rest of the season to prove it wrong.
