Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has revealed that the 2026-27 NHL season will be his last, bringing an end to a 22-year tenure with the organization and one of the most remarkable careers in league history. The 41-year-old made the announcement on Monday, exactly 21 years after his NHL debut.
Ovechkin shared the decision with his teammates before the Capitals confirmed it publicly. In a statement released by the team, he said, "My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL. I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it's the right decision." He added that he wanted his teammates to hear the news first and expressed a desire to make his final season meaningful while savoring time with his family, teammates, and Washington fans.
Capitals owner Ted Leonsis posted on social media: "Alex Ovechkin is one of the greatest players ever to play our game. For more than two decades, Alex has given our fans everything they could ask for: the goals, the records, the physicality, the passion, and an unmatched desire to win." Leonsis continued, "He has made countless nights at @CapitalOneArena unforgettable. He brought Washington a Stanley Cup, and he helped create some of the most joyful and unifying moments this city has ever experienced in sports."
Leonsis also highlighted Ovechkin's bond with the fanbase: "What has always stood out to me is Alex's connection with our fans. They have watched him grow from a young superstar into the face of this franchise, and they have been with him through every great moment. That relationship is rare. It is built on loyalty, shared memories, and the feeling that every time Alex steps on the ice, something special can happen." He concluded, "It's going to be a special and memorable final season, and I look forward to sharing the journey of @ovi8's final chapter with our fans."
Ovechkin has been the cornerstone of the Capitals for over two decades, guiding the franchise to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2018 and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. His 2026-27 campaign marks his 22nd season with a single NHL franchise, a distinction shared by only a few players, including Sidney Crosby.
After contemplating whether to continue his career following the previous season, Ovechkin signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract in July. The Russian-born forward entered his final season as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, with 929 regular-season goals. He surpassed Wayne Gretzky's longstanding record in 2025 and also holds league marks for power-play goals, game-winning goals, overtime goals, and 40-goal seasons.
He has amassed 1,688 points in 1,575 games, all with Washington, which selected him No. 1 overall in the 2004 NHL Draft. Ovechkin began the season with an assist in Washington's 5-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 2.
The Capitals will host Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in their home opener on Wednesday, giving fans their first opportunity to see Ovechkin begin what is expected to be a season-long farewell.
