Alex Ovechkin to Retire After 2026-2027 Season, Capitals Confirm

The Washington Capitals revealed on Monday that the 2026-2027 hockey season will be the final one for Alex Ovechkin, marking the end of an era for the franchise and the sport.

Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, has spent 22 seasons with the Capitals, the only team he has represented in the league.

Beyond being Washington, D.C.'s premier athlete, Ovechkin is widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players ever to take the ice.

In April, the left wing made history by surpassing Wayne Gretzky's longstanding record, becoming the NHL's all-time goal leader with 895 goals.

Although many speculated he would retire after that achievement, Ovechkin opted to sign a one-year contract with the team, possibly influenced by fans' chants for one more year.

As he enters his final season, Ovechkin boasts a historic 1,688 points and 929 goals.

His star power was evident from the start, as he led all rookies in points during his debut season.

The team captain sustained his excellence, guiding the Capitals to their first and only Stanley Cup in 2018 and then breaking the goal record eight years later.

Over his two decades with the Capitals, Ovechkin has been known for his playful side, including Stanley Cup keg stands, launching his own limited-edition cereal, and posing with a goat—a nod to his GOAT status—for a Washingtonian cover.

The legendary athlete is set to play his final regular-season home game at Capital One Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 4.

Tickets for the game are currently priced between $610 and $2,633, with prices continuing to rise.

It promises to be an emotional night for Capitals fans as they bid farewell to the late great Number 8.
