With the triumph, Vargas and Mexico advance to the round of 16.

They'll be back in action on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Alaska time, facing off with England in Mexico City.

For the first time since the franchise launched in 2021, the Anchorage Wolverines over the weekend had a former player selected in the NHL Draft.

Former goaltender Leo Henriquez was selected 170th overall in the sixth round by the Boston Bruins.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Leo and his family, and a special moment for our organization as he becomes the first NHL Draft pick in team history," Wolverines general manager Merit Waldrop said in a statement.

"We wish Leo the very best as he takes the next step in his hockey career." Henriquez appeared in 24 games for the Wolverines during the 2024-25 season and posted an impressive .923 save percentage before earning a call-up to play for the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers in the 2025-26 season.

He now joins a Bruins franchise that employs another goalie with ties to Alaska: Anchorage's own Jeremy Swayman, who is coming off his best season to date.

[Anchorage NHL player Jeremy Swayman reflects on a year that was 'a dream come true'] "Today is a historic day for the Anchorage Wolverines as we celebrate our first NHL Draft pick, but more importantly, a well-deserved accomplishment for Leo," Wolverines co-owner Kari Ellsworth said in a statement.

"Anyone who watched him play at Sullivan Arena knows how gifted he is and how lucky we were to have him in a Wolverines jersey.

We're proud to have been part of his journey and can't wait to watch this next chapter unfold.

Congratulations, Leo." Coming off a dominant high school track and field season that saw him successfully defend his Division I state discus title in late May, Benjamin Hiestand broke a nearly four-decade-old record in late June.
