Alabama Fans Throw Objects at Georgia Players After Controversial Calls in 20-17 Loss

Saturday's top-10 showdown between Georgia and Alabama ended with tension spilling over as Crimson Tide fans hurled objects at Georgia players near the tunnel following the Bulldogs' 20-17 win. The frustration stemmed from a series of disputed no-calls that many felt derailed Alabama's upset bid under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

The animosity from the stands persisted after the final whistle at Bryant-Denny Stadium. As Georgia players exited the field, fans were seen tossing items in their direction, creating a chaotic scene near the tunnel.

Key Analysis

The officiating controversies began in the third quarter when an interception by Alabama linebacker QB Reese was overturned. ABC analyst Kirk Herbstreit criticized the decision, arguing there was no conclusive evidence that the ball hit the turf rather than Reese's wrist. Although Georgia failed to capitalize—kicker Peyton Woodring missed a 39-yard field goal—the overturned turnover potentially robbed Alabama of a scoring opportunity in what became a three-point game.

Another pivotal moment came when officials opted not to call targeting on Georgia's Demello Jones after his hit dislodged the ball from Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams on third down. The no-call forced Alabama to punt after a false start penalty on fourth down.

The most contentious no-call occurred on Alabama's final drive. Quarterback Keelon Russell attempted a deep pass to Rico Scott for a potential go-ahead touchdown, but the ball was broken up by Georgia defensive back KJ Bolden. Replays suggested that Bolden and fellow defensive back Braylon Conley made contact with Scott before the ball arrived, preventing the catch. On the next play, Russell was sacked for a 9-yard loss, sealing the outcome.

"We can't put the game in the situation where the officials come into play," DeBoer said postgame. "We got to control the things we control."

With the loss, Alabama falls to 5-1 overall. The Crimson Tide will next travel to face No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m. ET in the latest installment of the Third Saturday in October rivalry.
