Agoura Football's Rise: From 1-9 to CIF Contender Under Dustin Croick

In Agoura Hills, California, the Chargers' football team has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a program that endured eight losing seasons between 2010 and 2019 to a legitimate CIF championship contender. The architect of this turnaround is head coach Dustin Croick, a local product who once quarterbacked the Chargers himself, setting school records for career wins, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

Croick's journey back to Agoura was anything but straightforward. After a successful college career at Iona, he planned to enter the movie business upon graduating in 2009. However, a devastating car accident left his father paralyzed, forcing Croick to return home to care for him. It was during this difficult period that then-Agoura head coach Charlie Wegher reached out, offering him a role as offensive coordinator. 'I fell in love with coaching,' Croick recalled. 'And learned to love the game of football from a different angle.'

Despite opportunities to coach at the collegiate level, including a stint at Cal Lutheran, financial realities led Croick to build a family business, Mike Green Fire Protection Agency. Yet football remained his passion. In January 2020, he was officially hired as Agoura's head coach, signing his contract on January 26th—a day that would become tragically memorable for Los Angeles due to the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven others. 'Kobe was my hero growing up,' Croick said. 'From that point forward, I wanted to honour Kobe with this opportunity by taking on the Mamba mentality when it came to building this program.'

Croick's early days were challenging, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to build relationships and install his culture virtually. He hired former NFL conditioning coach Ryan Capretta's company, Proactive, to oversee conditioning, and used his business experience to navigate the uncertainty. 'I just kept instilling hope that we were going to play,' Croick said. 'Did my best to install our schemes and to get to know the players.'

Central to the program's identity is the 'A-Town' slogan, coined by defensive line coach Chance Redman, which embodies attitude, toughness, and brotherhood (ATB). 'We can't match resources, facilities, or winning success with some of the other programs, but to Agoura youth, I can sell the experience of playing with the friends you grow up with,' Croick explained. The brand organically became a rallying cry, emphasizing community pride and camaraderie.

On the field, Croick's first major find came during an early practice when he noticed a tall sophomore receiver, Ty Dieffenbach, throwing a 40-yard pass. Croick convinced him to try quarterback, and Dieffenbach went on to break Croick's own records, throwing for 4,153 yards and 48 touchdowns. He earned All-State honors and committed to UNLV before eventually transferring to UCLA, where he recently made his first start. 'I'm just so proud of Ty,' Croick said. 'It just proves you can go to Agoura and play big-time college football.'

However, tragedy struck in August 2022 when freshman offensive lineman Carter Jones died of cardiac arrest during surgery due to an undiagnosed tumour. The Jones family, in their grief, hosted a team dinner the following week. 'It was the most inspiring thing I ever saw,' Croick said. 'While they were hurting, they chose to give.' The team dedicated their season to Carter, adopting the 'Be Like Carter' movement and retiring his number 76. Despite a 1-9 record that year, the junior varsity team went 9-1, showcasing the resilience and culture being built.

In 2023, with Dieffenbach sidelined by a knee injury and other setbacks, the Chargers turned to 5'8", 155-pound quarterback Harrison Novak. Despite doubts from opponents, Novak passed for 3,000 yards and led the county in completion percentage. The team upset Lompoc on the road, rattled off seven straight wins, and won their first playoff game in seven seasons. Agoura was placed in the Tri-County League as part of CIF re-leaguing and has since gone unbeaten in league play over the past two seasons.

In 2025, the program won 10 games and reached the CIF semifinals for the first time in 20 years. Croick developed his second Division 1 quarterback in Gavin Gray (committed to Washington State) and a Division 1 receiver in Miles Hull (San Jose State). Former safety Julian Patton, now the girls flag football head coach and a defensive backs coach for six years, has witnessed the shift. 'It is a major program shift,' Patton said. 'You go from 1-9 to multiple league titles; that's a big deal. It all starts with keeping Agoura's best talent in Agoura and proving we can win.'

The current 2025 team boasts a 6-1 record, with their only loss coming against top area team Westlake. Senior defensive lineman Will Gelt, who has 8.5 sacks (30th in California) and a scholarship to the University of San Diego, believes in the team's potential. 'The goal is to win a CIF championship,' Gelt said. 'We have a special group. Our team is so close; everyone has a puzzle piece in this team and everyone puts so much emphasis in their role.'

The Chargers' success is anchored by a physical and balanced attack, led by an experienced offensive line that returns all five starters, including left tackle Finn Ward, a Third Team All-State selection with an offer from Dayton. The engine of the team is senior captain George Hastings, a Christian McCaffrey prototype who excels as a runner, receiver, returner, and defender. 'George is the type of player who can win you a game single-handedly; he keeps the team together in tough times; the team calls him Captain America for a reason,' Croick said. Hastings, who holds a 4.3 GPA and has drawn interest from Johns Hopkins, remains humble. 'I just appreciate the trust the coaches have in me,' he said. 'My role is to exemplify toughness every day.'

Recently, Agoura secured a dramatic 29-21 overtime victory over rival Oak Park in the Kanan Bowl. Senior captain George Hastings rushed for 134 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime, then sealed the win with a pass breakup on defense. 'We are a close-knit group; a lot of us have played together since we were kids,' said defensive end Colin Murphy. 'The team knows the gravity of the situation, and we have each other's backs.'

Looking ahead, the Chargers face a tough road test against Camarillo before a potential league championship showdown with rival Calabasas. With alumni like Dieffenbach making waves at UCLA, the program is gaining national attention. 'Ty helped put this program on the map,' Patton said. 'The recognition is huge. But it's our responsibility as coaches to capture momentum and take this program to the next level.'

Despite the success, Croick remains grounded, focusing on relationships and the journey. 'It's easy to get washed up in the wins and losses and be encompassed in worrying about results,' he said. 'I want to enjoy the moments, and I want the students to as well. You only get to play high school football once, and you only have 4 years with every single class once.' As Agoura continues to make headlines, the foundation of attitude, toughness, and brotherhood remains at the heart of their resurgence.
