After 1,800 days away, Philip Rivers explains why he risked everything for one final shot

After spending nearly five years in retirement, Philip Rivers made a surprising NFL comeback at 44 years old, signing with the Indianapolis Colts in December 2025 after approximately 1,800 days away from football.

Rivers went on to appear in three regular-season games, capping an unlikely return that was fueled by faith, determination and a desire to seize one final opportunity.

For Rivers, however, the biggest challenge wasnt learning the playbook or getting back into football shape.

It was overcoming the self-doubt that naturally surfaced after spending so much time away from the game.

The doubt kept creeping in.

Can I do it? Can I actually do it? For a period of time, that was swaying me away, Rivers admitted while reflecting on the decision to resume his NFL career.

Instead of allowing those thoughts to derail his comeback, Rivers eventually embraced them as a natural part of the process.

Then I started telling myself, Wait a minute.

That doubt is okay.

Thats normal.

Its been 1,800 days since you played football.

The eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback realized questioning himself didnt mean he lacked confidence.

It simply reflected the reality of attempting something few players ever try after nearly five years away from professional football.

Rivers reveals how Frank Reich convinced him to return Searching for clarity, Rivers turned to someone he deeply trusted: former Colts head coach Frank Reich.

I called my old coach Frank Reich.

I went through everything I had been wrestling with.

I said, Frank, youve heard all of it.

Why should I do it? Reichs answer proved to be exactly what Rivers needed.

His answer was: Because you can.

I just thought, Youre dang right I can! That brief conversation erased the uncertainty.

It was confirmation from someone I trusted and respected.

So I called and said, Alright, lets go.

Lets go for it.

The only way to find out is to do it.

Even after committing to the comeback, Rivers knew there were no guarantees.

He accepted that the experience could end in disappointment or injury.

I didnt know what the results were going to be.

I got to the point where I was fine with whatever happened.

Ultimately, Rivers decided the fear of failure wasnt nearly as powerful as the regret he would have felt by passing on the opportunity.

The only way to find out is to go for it, Rivers said.

I knew I would regret sitting at home the next week after having the opportunity.

I wouldve watched the Colts game thinking, I should be there.
