Adam Fantilli's Contract Standoff Holding Blue Jackets Hostage, Says Insider Friedman

As the Columbus Blue Jackets conclude training camp and begin exhibition play, a critical piece of their lineup remains absent. Adam Fantilli, a cornerstone forward, has yet to report because he is still a restricted free agent without a contract, having just completed his entry-level deal.

This impasse adds to a growing list of concerns for the Blue Jackets, who are already navigating uncertainty surrounding Kirill Marchenko's future and the offseason fallout involving top defenseman Zach Werenski.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the stalemate between Fantilli and the team is preventing Columbus from addressing other important player decisions, particularly Marchenko, who is entering the final year of his contract. "As far as I know, I think there has been some movement, but obviously, it's not done," Friedman said on his recent 32 Thoughts podcast via Sportsnet. "They probably need to know Fantilli's number before they make other decisions... then you can figure out, 'Okay, where do these other pieces fit?' You've gotta know what Fantilli's number is before you walk yourself into another salary cap problem."

Key Analysis

Fantilli, selected third overall by Columbus in the 2023 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut on his 19th birthday in October 2023 and scored his first goal nine days later against the Minnesota Wild. His rookie campaign was cut short in January 2024 by a calf laceration, limiting him to 12 goals and 15 assists in 49 games. Over his NHL career, he has skated in 213 games, recording 67 goals and 73 assists for 140 points, along with 72 penalty minutes.
