Aaron Boone to Remain Yankees Manager Through 2027 Season, Source Confirms

Aaron Boone is set to return for his 10th season at the helm of the New York Yankees in 2027, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday. The confirmation comes more than a week after the team was knocked out in the American League Division Series for the second straight year.

Boone's contract extends through next season, the final year of a two-year, $10.5 million extension he signed in February 2025. The Yankees originally hired Boone from the ESPN broadcast booth in December 2017 to succeed Joe Girardi.

His tenure has been a mixed bag: consistent regular-season success paired with persistent postseason shortcomings. Boone's .583 winning percentage ranks tied for 17th in major league history. The Yankees have made the playoffs in eight of his nine campaigns and have never finished worse than two games over .500, extending the franchise's MLB-record streak of 34 consecutive winning seasons.

However, the Yankees have not captured a World Series since Girardi led them to the 2009 title. That 17-season drought is the second longest in franchise history. They have now gone 13 straight playoff appearances without a World Series crown, tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLB postseason history.

Under Boone, the Yankees have reached the World Series once, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in 2024. They have advanced to the ALCS twice, falling to the Houston Astros in 2019 and 2022. They have also lost to AL East rivals who beat them out for the division title—the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays—and watched those teams celebrate at Yankee Stadium in each of the past two seasons.

This season, two years after a three-error inning in Game 5 of the World Series haunted them, sloppiness cost the Yankees again when they committed three errors in the first inning of Game 2 of the ALDS against the Rays. The Yankees lost that night. Two days later, Tampa Bay completed a sweep in Game 3 in New York.

"You go through a lot as a group and then it's just a sudden end," Boone said after Game 3. "It's the worst fricking feeling in the world. You know, again, offering that perspective with all due respect. And I have that perspective of we are playing a game. I understand that. But it doesn't lessen the pain of the ending, you know, and hopefully that's something that again continues to fuel guys that are going through this for the first time and then those of us that have been through it a lot." The Bergen Record was first to report Boone's return.

Key Analysis

Boone's return ensures continuity for a Yankees team that has dominated the regular season but repeatedly fallen short in the playoffs. With a roster built to win now, the pressure will be on Boone and the organization to finally deliver a championship in 2027.
