AJ Dybantsa, the possible top pick in Tuesdays NBA Draft, recalled the valued he learned at Trinity Catholic Academy in Brockton during a talk last week sponsored by the Campaign for Catholic Schools.
Dybantsa said he doesnt lose confidence on the court as he knows what he is capable on the court.
Everyone has a bad game, but you have to have a short memory, he said, according to a video of the June 16 event held at the UMass Club in Boston.
That doesnt impact my confidence, because I know what I can do out there.
Dybantsa went to elementary school at Trinity Academy, and spent his freshman year of high school at St.
Sebastians in Needham, before heading off to prep schools in California and Utah.
The 19-year-old played this past year at Brigham Young University in Utah, where he led mens college basketball in scoring nationally.
The event also featured Dybantsas father, Ace Dybantsa, and remarks from Dana Barros, a former NBA All-Star from Mattapan who starred at Boston College.
Barros is a trustee of the Campaign for Catholic Schools, the nonprofit said in a statement.
The evening highlighted the role CCS Trinity Catholic Academy played in AJs development and the broader mission of Campaign for Catholic Schools, the statement said.
The Campaign for Catholic Schools sponsor Trinity Catholic in Brockton and St.
John Paul Catholic Academy in Dorchester.
The schools serve students in grades pre-k to eight.
Ace Dybantsa said there were moments in his sons life where he put academics and personal responsibility ahead of basketball, according to the statement.
The campaign was founded in 2007 by businessman Jack Connors as part of a plan to reinvigorate urban Catholic schools in Greater Boston.
Every student in a CCS-supported school receives reduced tuition and more than 70 percent of families receive financial aid or scholarship support on top of that, CCS said.
Bob Atchinson, the CCS chair, said Tuesdays event featuring AJ and Ace Dybantsa was a reminder of why this work matters.
Every child deserves the opportunity to attend a school where they are known, valued, and believed in.
