4 takeaways as Celtics lose to Magic in Summer League finale

The Celtics lost to the Magic 103-97 on Saturday from Las Vegas, finishing up their five-game slate in Summer League.

Boston finished 3-2 from Vegas.

The next time the Cs are on the court, itll be the main club playing preseason games in preparation for what should be an interesting regular season.

The Magic went up by double-digits early in the first quarter, but the Celtics quickly came back to tie the score.

That set up what was a back-and-forth contest for the middle parts of Saturdays game.

However, the Magic pulled away in the third quarter again by double-digits.

While Boston tried to make a comeback, it wasnt enough.

John Tonje led the Celtics with 14 points while Caleb Grill had 18 points off the bench.

Malik Reneau had 19 points for the Magic and AuDiese Toney added 18.

The Celtics rested three of their guys in Hugo Gonzalez, Chris Cenac Jr.

and Dillon Mitchell.

Here are four takeaways from Bostons loss to Orlando to wrap up Summer League play: Making a case: Tonje had another solid game from Vegas, finishing with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists on 6-for-9 shooting.

Hes still fighting for a two-way contract and he played well overall throughout Summer League.

Tonje ended up in the Cs organization after getting traded from Utah midway through last season.

If the Celtics sign Mitchell to a two-way contract, that still leaves one two-way slot open on the roster.

Its unclear what Boston will do there, but Tonje at least played well to showcase what he can provide.

Resting guys: The Celtics saw enough from their trio of Gonzalez, Cenac and Mitchell from Vegas.

It was a solid Summer League showing from those three in some form.

Gonzalez had the ball in his hands plenty, and while he couldve been more efficient, flashed his playmaking.

Mitchell was a wing who can inject life into a game with his energy and athleticism, plus he made some 3-pointers.

Cenac will likely need some time before becoming an NBA contributor, but its clear the potential is high for the center.

All three guys are at good spots coming out of Summer League.

Keep an eye on: Among the Celtics Vegas guys, two rookies will also spend training camp in Boston.

Milos Uzan and Tucker DeVries have been signed to Exhibit 10 contracts, which are essentially training camp invites.

Uzan has been a plus player in Las Vegas, plus its clear DeVries can shoot well.

Theyre not highly-touted guys or were even drafted, but theyll at least get an extended audition in front of the Celtics decision-makers going forward.

If they get waived, they can also get a bonus if they stick with the Maine Celtics in the G League for 60 days.

Playing the bench: Cs Summer League coach Amile Jefferson emptied his bench in the final game from Vegas.

Interestingly, all 13 guys who played Saturday scored at least one bucket.

While some of these end-of-bench guys might not play in the NBA, these live reps are still crucial for their careers going forward.

Even at Summer League, there are international scouts looking to fill out rosters.

It was clearly evident how serious these guys were taking Saturdays game with the level of hustle displayed from both teams.
