Third man arrested after stabbing footballer in Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day

A third man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a footballer who was fatally stabbed in a Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day. Police said they recovered the knife as part of an investigation.

Cody Fisher, 23, died while “enjoying a night out with friends” at Crane nightclub on Adderley Street in Digbeth, West Midlands police said.

Officers were called to the crane just before 11:45 p.m. and Mr. Fisher was declared dead half an hour later.

Detectives arrested a 22-year-old suspect in London around 3am on Thursday. He will now be questioned about the football player’s death.

A third person has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and four others have been arrested on suspicion of aiding.

Police said yesterday that a 22-year-old man had been detained at a city center address and a 21-year-old man had been detained in London.

A knife was recovered as part of the investigation, and an autopsy confirmed Fisher died of a stab wound, West Midlands Police said.

Police have also submitted a request to Birmingham City Council to review the crane’s license to operate, and a hearing is scheduled to be held on Friday to pursue that.

Licensing officers called for immediate action to be taken to ensure public safety, and the venue canceled plans for New Year’s Eve.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Ingram, who is leading the investigation, reiterated on Thursday a plea for anyone with information to contact police.

“Seven people are currently in custody and continue to build a picture of the events that led to the tragic loss of this young man’s life.

“People continue to provide information, but we look forward to hearing from those who have not yet reached out to us.

“If you have footage that we haven’t seen yet, or if you know what happened leading up to the tragic events of Boxing Day, do the right thing and tell us now. recommend to.

“We are determined to get answers and justice for Cody’s friends and family and will not stop until that happens.

“We will keep them up to date as developments occur and continue to support them through this terrible time.”

A relative from Fisher’s home in Studley, Warwickshire told MailOnline: We are devastated and trying to figure it out.

“Cody was a great boy and his family had a wonderful Christmas. All of this is truly heartbreaking.

Originally from Redditch, the 23-year-old was a semi-professional footballer who played for Stratford Town, Stourbridge FC and Bromsgrove Sporting.

His girlfriend Jess Chatwin also shared a short tribute on social media.・I love Fisher forever.

On her Instagram story, Chatwin posted a photo of the pair going out for drinks with the caption, “My baby smile.” How can I take him away? It was meant to be us forever.

Crane said he canceled the New Year’s Eve event in light of the incident and is working closely with police.

Nightclub revelers criticized the search for security at the event and recalled a “moody” atmosphere inside the venue, where popular techno DJ Marco Carola was playing.

An 18-year-old man from Wolverhampton, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident was “waiting for disaster to happen” because of a poor search by security and “anyone could bring anything”.

He said of the entry: I was wearing cargo pants with lots of pockets.

“They didn’t even touch me while they were looking for me. They just traced the contours of my body with their hand and patted me, telling me to continue.

“We obviously want everyone to have a good time and have fun. [but] When we entered I said to my friend: “That’s the worst find I’ve ever seen”.

Lieutenant Michelle Thurgood, who led the investigation, said: “This was a young man who was having fun with his friends on Boxing Day night and our thoughts today are with his friends and family.

“I know there were hundreds of people in nightclubs at the time. It is necessary to listen to the person who has done so.

“We believe the victim approached several people and was then stabbed, so we are working hard to identify all those involved.”

Stratford Town Football posted the following on Twitter in memory of the player.

“Our deepest condolences to Cody’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with you during this extremely difficult time.

Non-league football club Bromsgrove Sporting also paid tribute to the former player.

The club tweeted: “All of us at Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cody Fisher.

“Cody is a friend of many at the club and our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
