The Lancers outperform La Habra in the Freeway League game and improve their record to 11-0-3 overall.

Last season’s run to the CIF Division 3 Championship was impressive, but pales in comparison to what Sunny Hills High School’s men’s soccer team has done so far.

The Lancers hit hard on their way to graduation, but are currently ranked 11-0-3 and 2-0 in the Freeway League. Max Preps4th Nationally, 2nd in California, 1st in CIF Southern Section.

And the Lancers have yet to play a home match.

Sunny Hills has a natural grass field and is one of only two teams in the Freeway League with such conditions (the other being Troy). The Lancers played on a funky temporary field last year while the regular field was being reworked (each team had half playing downhill and another half playing uphill).

They have tried to stray away from the regular field this season and the grass is
growing up. Had it not been for the heavy rains that hit the area recently, the field would have been playable now.

“We have a few patches of grass where we can practice,” said manager Mike Scheid after Friday’s 3-0 win over La Habra. “But we also practiced on the asphalt.”

The Lancers have a home game against Buena Park on Wednesday, but with heavy rain forecast for Tuesday, the game is unlikely to be played at Sunny Hills.

The Lancers were due to open the league at home last Wednesday, but the field was unplayable and the game was moved to Fullerton, where the Lancers won 1-0 in a match that featured last season’s co-champions.

Rookie Isaac Morales, who scored the only goal against Fullerton, scored his first for the Lancers against La Habra, while current CIF Division 3 Player of the Year Matthias Braun scored the other two against La Habra. rice field. .

The Freeway League is a highly competitive youth soccer league every year and this year is no exception. Fullerton made it to Division 1 last year and are doing well this season. Except La Habra is much more competitive when he hits full force in the second round of the league, Buena his perks have improved, Troy is big and physical and Sonora is also a threat.
