With Tom Brady officially retired, it’s virtually certain that the Patriots will retire his number 12 jersey. Zero players have worn the number since Brady left New England three years before him.
But what about the entire NFL ditching Brady’s jersey numbers? Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan did just that after the 45-year-old quarterback announced his retirement.
“The NFL should abolish number 12 on all teams,” Luwan tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
It sounds aggressive.
Bill Russell (NBA), Jackie Robinson (MLB) and Wayne Gretzky (NHL) are the only three players to have retired from one of North America’s four major professional sports leagues. The NFL has yet to give such an honor.
Of course, Russell and Robinson saw their numbers retired for reasons beyond their in-game brilliance. The honor was given after putting together a career that still stands as a book.To be fair, Brady could make a similar claim.
