MEXICO CITY (AP) \u2014 Mexico’s interior secretary received an official message of support from the football star and former star on Saturday. Some have interpreted this as boosting his ambitions for the presidential nomination. <\/p>\n
Adan Agusto L\u00f3pez is Mexico’s second-largest parliamentary secretary of the interior, behind President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador. <\/p>\n
Former American forward Giovani Dos Santos recorded a message on social media, telling Lopez, “I am very pleased with your friendship.” USA international Miguel Lajun and former midfielder Braulio Luna also posted similar messages. <\/p>\n
As for the timing of the message, it is unusual as Lopez Obrador’s Morena party’s presidential nomination will not be decided until late 2023. And Lopez is believed to be well behind the frontrunner in that race, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Scheinbaum. <\/p>\n
Lopez, who has no relationship with the president, thanked the players, but refrained from sending a clear endorsement message because primaries won’t officially open until the fall and Mexican law prohibits early campaigning. I asked people<\/p>\n
This is a thorny issue in Mexico, where the names of presidential candidates like Scheinbaum are already painted on walls and billboards.<\/p>\n
Also, in past Mexican elections, show business and Internet celebrities have been criticized for recording online messages supporting politicians, outside the strict laws governing such advertising.<\/p>\n
Dos Santos immediately released a statement, revealing that he had been asked by a close friend to tape-record the message.<\/p>\n
“I would like to emphasize that it was not done as part of a campaign or for any specific political endorsement,” Dos Santos wrote. Sharing in a friendly way is part of my career.” <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
