st. Paul, Ming.<\/strong> \u2013 Minnesota United FC’s Power Soccer team is back from its first wheelchair soccer tournament.<\/p>\n

Team member Joe Boerboom knows he needs to play his best. His team moved to Arizona last weekend and faced some of the toughest competition to date.<\/p>\n

“It was fun. We got to play against international teams like Mexico and Canada. They were really good. It was good competition,” said Boerboom. <\/p>\n

It’s not only competitive, but it’s also a cultural exchange, says coach Katie Kenzie.<\/p>\n

“Every team we played in Phoenix was a few conferences above us,” Kenzie said. “And for us to be competitive and to keep those games, you know, to keep a tight game, there were some 1-0 losses, but we’re together. Playing well is a really good sign for us.” <\/p>\n

Also, the players are not playing in typical power wheelchairs.<\/p>\n

“Power soccer players use these Strike Force chairs with metal guards attached to the front here, and they actually move faster than regular power wheelchairs,” she said. . \u201cAnd athletes can dribble, pass, and shoot the ball. The ball is so big that it can be contained and kicked by the guards of these Strike Force wheelchairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

This experience fuels Boerboom’s passion.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, I want to represent the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kensy says power soccer has a bright future for her players, who train at Golden Valley’s Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute.<\/p>\n

“I can’t wait to see where they go,” Kenzie said.<\/p>\n
