(Photo by Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions via Getty Images)

On Nov. 17, both Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia took to social media to announce that they had agreed to fight each other in all things sports agree.

Davis said on Twitter that so far the fight was “signed for sealed delivery… done.”

But Oscar de la Hoya, a Hall of Fame fighter and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said on Saturday when he issued a tweet demanding a signed contract from the Premier Boxing Champions and Davis on Monday. caused some commotion. Stay away, no fighting will happen.

That tweet raised eyebrows, but on Tuesday De La Hoya posed with Garcia in the GBP office holding what appears to be a contract. April 15 Let’s go!!!” He then tagged Garcia and Davis in the post.

Yahoo Sports reached out to Golden Boy president Eric Gomez.

That means the fight is now mostly official. Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza was once De La Hoya’s attorney and negotiated many of his fight deals. Espinoza told Fight Hub TV that it’s common for De La Hoya to sign a deal the week of a fight.

But Espinoza said all was agreed when Davis and Garcia tweeted in November.

“The day they announced it, Fighter announced they had signed a deal. ‘I was happy to say,’ he told Fighthub. “Then why it changed after a few days is a mystery to me.”

The Davis-Garcia fight is the first of three epic bouts boxing fans have been waiting for, but none have been fully settled yet. Davis-Garcia looks closest to crossing the finish line to make a deal for the undisputed heavyweight title fight between consolidated champion Oleksandr Usyk and lineal champion Tyson Fury There is still work to be done.

story continues

The undisputed welterweight title bout between unified champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBO champion Terrence Crawford is far more problematic.

Kudos to Davis and Garcia for demanding a fight from the team. It’s an attractive fight and Davis is probably the favorite to win given his experience.

Garbonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia Development

Davis is ranked number 10 on Yahoo Sports’ pound for pound list and is generally considered one of the top 15 best players in the world. Garcia isn’t on the list, but he has the speed and power to make him a legitimate threat to beat hard hitter Davis.

Garcia is 23-0 with 19 KOs. He’s not a hard, pounding puncher like Davis, but he draws power from his fiery, quick hands. He will have faster hands and better feet and Davis will have better power.

For Garcia to win, he must control the distance, keep Davis on the end of his jab, and avoid mistakes. Punishment must be given.

Davis has more headroom. He’s a much smarter fighter than he’s credited for, and defensively, he’s adept at letting his punches slide as he works his way inwards.

He has to periodically touch Garcia to slow him down. He has home-run type power that can end a fight at any time, so there’s no need to stack rounds on the scorecard.

However, Davis notes that Garcia should be wary of his powers and not just allow Garcia to fire at him from the outside without repercussions.

<img decoding="async" class="caas-img caas-lazy has-preview" alt="WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 7: Garbonta Davis punches Hector Luis Garcia for the WBA World Lightweight Championship at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC on January 7, 2023. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

The great thing is that it’s an important battle for the division. Along the lines of 500,000 to 650,000 pay-per-view purchases, it’s likely to do quite a bit of business, with T-Mobile Arena earning as much as $10 million, if not more, at the pay gate. This is a fight every boxing fan wants to see.

The Q1 schedule is sparse, with little to get fans excited about.

The match between Davis and Garcia is going to be a blast.

When all the entities involved tweeted on November 17th that a fight was going on, it seemed official. This is boxing and weird things happen sometimes, so it’s always wise to be cautiously optimistic until things become official.

This is not a fight that will save boxing or change the course of history. But it will be the fun, competitive fight that fans have been waiting for.

After all, listening to your customers and making them happy is never a bad thing.

[ad_2]

Source link

[ad_1] Barring any unexpected delays, Ryan Garcia (trainer Joe Goosen, above) will take on Jerbonta Davis on April 15 in Las Vegas.
