January 9, 2023 at 5:31 PM<\/span>Updated 20 minutes ago<\/span><\/p>\n To: <\/span>News 12 Staff<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A teenager is in stable condition after collapsing during a high school basketball game.<\/p>\n Fifteen-year-old John Maro played for St James’ School in Basking Ridge. The game was held Saturday night at Auten Road Middle School in Hillsboro.<\/p>\n Coach John Travers said the game had just started and he had already scored four points when Maro went down.<\/p>\n Maro’s father and other parents rushed onto the court and started CPR. Coach Travers called his 911. A defibrillator was used to shock Maro’s heart and he was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.<\/p>\n On Monday, the teen was reported to be doing well.<\/p>\n “Johnny was sitting in a hospital bed. He was actually able to sit next to the bed this morning and was talking to his parents,” Travers says. “It put the biggest smile on my face. He’s a very good friend of my son. They play on two basketball teams.”<\/p>\n The family told News 12 that the eighth grader was born with pulmonary stenosis, a narrowing of the heart valve that can restrict blood flow.<\/p>\n Maro had a valve implant two years ago and his doctor cleared him to play basketball. Maro’s father says the medical problem had nothing to do with his son collapsing on the court. Her parents say this is worrying because they need to understand what happened.<\/p>\n Doctors at the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital, where he is being transported, are trying to determine why Maro collapsed.<\/p>\n Travers says he is grateful to the Hillsboro Police Department and wants them to know how grateful they were for helping save Maro’s life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
