They parted ways with David Curry last January after he went 4-13 in his only season.<\/p>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-1f556a34=\"\">In a statement announcing Smith&#8217;s dismissal, general manager Nick Caserio said, &#8220;I have always evaluated football operations and believe this is the best decision at this time.&#8221; It is my responsibility to build an inclusive and competitive program that can be sustained, but with the support of the (team owners) McNair family and the resources available, I am not currently there, football program in the future. I am confident in the direction of<\/p>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-1f556a34=\"\">The Texans had the worst record in the league for most of the season, but won two of their final three games, and Sunday&#8217;s victory over the Colts earned the team the first overall pick in next year&#8217;s draft.<\/p>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-1f556a34=\"\">A 32-31 win over Indianapolis gave Chicago the number one pick and Houston the number two pick in April&#8217;s draft.<\/p>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-1f556a34=\"\">Smith was promoted to head coach after serving as the team&#8217;s defensive coordinator for one season.  His season in 2022 was his 12th as head coach, surpassing his record of 92-100-1 in his career, including his nine seasons with the Bears and his two seasons with Tampa Bay. Dom Capers was the team&#8217;s first coach, and he directed four his seasons until his dismissal.
